Movement & Styles

Movements & Styles

Early Modern, American Kitsch, Late Modern, Swiss, Contemporary, Psychedelic, Postmodern, and Digital

EARLY MODERN
I found this chair being sold on Etsy and it screamed early modern to me. They loved geometry during that time and did not want ornamentation on things. It doesn't look very comfortable but it reminded me of the one we saw in one of our slides that was primary colors. Overall it was very different then previous movements with tons of frill!

AMERICAN KITSCH
This is a photo of a diner that is the ultimate American Kitsch representation! Kitsch was during the 50s and was a very fun movement of design. They loved curves and shapely items in everything. Personally I love the colors in this diner and think it seems light but still keeps to the dramatic factor of the era.

LATE MODERN
Here is a photo from Frank Lloyd Wright's House Falling Water. We discussed him and the home in our power point of Late Modern because of the clean lines and function influencing form. In the Late Modern era simple geometric shapes and simplicity played a large part of design. I love the color palette and how everything seems to fit together.

SWISS / INTERNATIONAL
My example for swiss design comes from Ryan an instructor at O'more and his design for Helvetica Cards. During the Swiss era the color scheme of black white and red was HUGE! Also during this time the font Helvetica was introduced and used everywhere. The symbols and color scheme are what drew my attention to these awesome cards!

CONTEMPORARY
This piece is from a book called Naive all about contemporary art and the design of it. During this time they used minimal shapes to convey a message. Alot of silhouettes were used during this era and I appreciate the clean look of the designs of this time. The colors on these pieces are very fun and not too overwhelming with the amount of white space.

PSYCHEDELIC
This poster I found was for Jimi Hendrix and this piece grabbed my attention as the perfect piece for psychedelic. The colors during this time were super bright and in your face. The type was usually hand drawn and wavy. Graphic design during this time grabbed the attention of young people and were perfect for concert posters!

POSTMODERN
This is the St. Louis Arch and I thought it was perfect for Post Modern Era. During this time architecture like the Opera house in Sydney was designed. It shows the obsession with geometry during this time. It is a gentle era where things were meant to be visually appealing and abstract.

DIGITAL
The digital era was the time of computers. I thought who better to represent this era then Mr. David Carson himself. Digital design had collage and images put together to form cohesive pieces. David Carson pushed the boundaries of type and legibility in all of his designs this one included. This spread he made, combined random items and made to fit together into a design. He started a revolution of people copying him and this style ended up everywhere.

Paste-Up Project

PASTE-UP PROJECT

In class we did a paste-up project to show how prints were sent out "back in the day" to the printer before computer mock ups. I thought this was a fun activity since I grew up watching my mother do graphic design this way. Each layer represented a different color the first being Yellow the second being Cyan the third being Magenta and finally the black was on top. Then we wrote notes on color percentages on the tissue paper on top. My least favorite part was cutting the words and placing them into a circle just because of the time it took. Overall I was happy with this and how it turned out. Final project looks very similar to the photo we copied!

Printmaking Project

PRINT MAKING PROJECT

In class we created a print by carving a design into a piece of eraser. We also watched a power point on psychedelia that day so I wanted my design to match that. First we started by taking a piece of tissue paper drawing our design and flipping it around so we are tracing it backwards. Then we used a carving tool to carve out the areas we did not want to show up. Finally we rolled a black in across it and stamped it on a piece of paper! Overall I thought it was really fun and I haven't ever done anything like it! It was definitely a learning experience & pretty happy with how it turned out!

FUN Book Cover Designs!

FUN BOOK COVER DESIGNS

These beautiful typographic book covers were designed by Kate Forrester. I love the illustrative personality each one of these have and you can't help but smile when you look at them! I think the strongest part is the type work she combines numerous fonts and still they look like one cohesive piece. The colors are also reflective of the playful fun designs she created. I just love them and want some of them as posters on my wall so I can smile everyday!

Hatch Show Print Visit

HATCH SHOW PRINT VISIT
So Malerie and I took a visit over to Hatch Show Print Friday Nov 19th.
It was interesting to come visit the store after hearing the lecture from Jim. It seemed like everything was every where but they all knew where everything is. We saw the cats in the store which was CUTE! and there were quite a few people inside. We took a look at the posters they have for sale and some were cheaper and others were a little pricier. I would for sure like to go back and buy a piece for my home. One of my favorite parts is seeing how many pieces of lettering and images they have there are tons of different plates! I suggest everyone takes a visit to downtown to see Hatch Show Print!! Here are some of the posters we saw there! They are all beautiful!

Rare Prints Gallery Field Trip

RARE PRINTS GALLERY FIELD TRIP
DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN

We had a field trip to downtown Franklin to see the rare print gallery. The prints there varied in print techniques used and were either original prints or reprinted. We talked about the different printings and how it evolved through the years. The etchings to the water color painting prints. We also discussed the artist who taxidermy the birds so he can paint them which one of his photos is below. I found this to be disturbing but an interesting fact. Overall the field trip was informative and interesting but the prints were very expensive!

Identity Movie Poster

IDENTITY MOVIE POSTER

I found this piece of graphic design on the internet when researching movie posters. I loved this design with the coloring and imagery for a scary movie. The hand print symbolizes the word Identity and having different silhouettes of people as figures is brilliant! The amount of white space is important to framing the focal point of the poster. The type work also reflects the simplicity of the piece. Overall I think this design draws the audience in to want to watch it without giving too much of the movie plot.
