PRINT MAKING PROJECT

In class we created a print by carving a design into a piece of eraser. We also watched a power point on psychedelia that day so I wanted my design to match that. First we started by taking a piece of tissue paper drawing our design and flipping it around so we are tracing it backwards. Then we used a carving tool to carve out the areas we did not want to show up. Finally we rolled a black in across it and stamped it on a piece of paper! Overall I thought it was really fun and I haven't ever done anything like it! It was definitely a learning experience & pretty happy with how it turned out!

FUN BOOK COVER DESIGNS

These beautiful typographic book covers were designed by Kate Forrester. I love the illustrative personality each one of these have and you can't help but smile when you look at them! I think the strongest part is the type work she combines numerous fonts and still they look like one cohesive piece. The colors are also reflective of the playful fun designs she created. I just love them and want some of them as posters on my wall so I can smile everyday!

Hatch Show Print Visit

HATCH SHOW PRINT VISIT

So Malerie and I took a visit over to Hatch Show Print Friday Nov 19th. 

It was interesting to come visit the store after hearing the lecture from Jim. It seemed like everything was every where but they all knew where everything is. We saw the cats in the store which was CUTE! and there were quite a few people inside. We took a look at the posters they have for sale and some were cheaper and others were a little pricier. I would for sure like to go back and buy a piece for my home. One of my favorite parts is seeing how many pieces of lettering and images they have there are tons of different plates! I suggest everyone takes a visit to downtown to see Hatch Show Print!! Here are some of the posters we saw there! They are all beautiful!

RARE PRINTS GALLERY FIELD TRIP

DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN

 

We had a field trip to downtown Franklin to see the rare print gallery. The prints there varied in print techniques used and were either original prints or reprinted. We talked about the different printings and how it evolved through the years. The etchings to the water color painting prints. We also discussed the artist who taxidermy the birds so he can paint them which one of his photos is below. I found this to be disturbing but an interesting fact. Overall the field trip was informative and interesting but the prints were very expensive!

IDENTITY MOVIE POSTER

I found this piece of graphic design on the internet when researching movie posters. I loved this design with the coloring and imagery for a scary movie. The hand print symbolizes the word Identity and having different silhouettes of people as figures is brilliant! The amount of white space is important to framing the focal point of the poster. The type work also reflects the simplicity of the piece. Overall I think this design draws the audience in to want to watch it without giving too much of the movie plot.

Our last chapters were about Saul Bass and all of his creations.

This is by far one of my favorites pieces of his in the link of the video above

you can watch the opening title credits he created. Although simple he conveys the

message that the man is falling with just simple rotating circles and shapes. Also

the meaning of Vertigo (which the main character has) is feeling like your moving

without actual movement which is what this conveys. I think it is a creative abstract way to

convey a message. The type works well with the design only being dominant in the opening

movie title scene. He also incorporate a woman because the man in the movie is obsessed 
with a woman and she proves to be mysterious.

I saw this CD cover at my local Target today and among the other CDs the contrast defiantly stands out. More importantly I think is speaks to her demographic which is young females. It is whimsical and feminine with almost a fairy like feeling. The typography is a hand written typeface that also adds to the whimsical tone. She should be proud of her 1 million sales in the first week. Maybe some sales are from the eye catching design that any young girl passing would beg her parents to buy!
